Seas The Day

Today was our first full day at sea. A great opportunity to explore the ship and to make new friends. We started the day at about 6:30am with a trip to the coffee shop to be greeted with two lattes and a smile from Wendy and Rommel. We then managed some exercise in the morning. Allison worked out on a bike to rehab her knee, and John ventured up to Deck 12 for a walk. 
Although the weather is pretty nice - it's 79F (26C) and mostly sunny - it is very windy with a steady 15mph and gusts up to 20mph. That makes the walk around the deck quite entertaining. One half of the lap, you're facing a strong headwind, and the next half, you have a tailwind trying to blow you off your feet. Extra calories burnt, I hope. After showering, I went looking for a quiet place to catch up on reading and restarting my murder mystery novel. I discovered that the back end (stern) of Deck 6 and the front end (bow) of Deck 12 both have almost deserted lounges. A great place to hang out. 

Rejoined Allison for a lovely mahi-mahi lunch and then we went our own ways to play games. Allison found a Mah Jongg group, and John discovered some competitive golf and ring toss games (more on that tomorrow). Then Trivia at 4:30pm and dinner at 6:30pm. Met two great couples and learnt a lot about the Canadian political system. Tough life. Seriously though, I managed over 14,000 steps today and 63 flights of stairs.

We're now heading due south towards Cartagena, Columbia, having passed between Cuba (that's what you see in the distance of the picture) and Haiti. We've traveled over 650 miles since leaving Miami and expect to reach port at about 7am on January 10th.

      Peggy, I figure the exercise is the trade off that let’s me eat all the food (or at least that’s the plan)

    Thanks for the update John! Sounds like you and Allison are already at home at SEA! You are painting a beautiful picture on the canvas for all of us to see, and I truly feel we are on this journey with you both! Can’t wait for the next blog. Stay well and have fun!

Day 141: Ponta Delgada - Ambling Through The Azores

  Today, we visited the Azores, another set of islands in the Atlantic Ocean. They’re a group of nine volcanic islands about 850 miles west of Portugal, set in a 2-5-2 formation. To prove we’re truly heading home, they are about 1200 miles southeast of Newfoundland. We actually have to travel east-south-east to reach Bermuda, our next port of call. Allison went shopping and I took a walking tour of downtown Ponta Delgada - the unofficial capital and largest city. Considering they’re literally stuck in the middle of nowhere, the islands are impressive. Most have at least 3000 ft peaks and Pico Island maxes out at 7700 feet - the highest point in Portugal. When measured from the sea floor, the mountains in the Azores are some of the largest on Earth. The volcanoes are still active, averaging one event every 30 years. Day 8 : Puntarenas - Costa Rica

Another new country for both of us. Yay! Our latest port of call was Puntarenas on the Pacific Coast of Costa Rica. The Ticos and Ticas (as they nickname themselves) are a very eco-conscious country, so the excursion today involved an aerial tram through the forest, a horticultural and butterfly display, and many, many crocodiles. But - back to CR. The major businesses and exports of the country are medical devices (they bring in the parts and export finished supplies and devices) and consumables like coffee and bananas. Plus of course, tourism with a specialty in ecotours and surfing! The government, a number of decades ago, decided not to have a military. Instead, they invest the money they would spend into infrastructure and the people. There are heavy grants for anyone who grows coffee or lets their land "jungle over."
